The Wheeler Boys Swim team successfully defended their GSS Conference Champion title for the 11th consecutive year scoring 326 points to North Newton’s 257, Griffith’s 209, Bishop Noll’s 122, and Calumet’s 69! It was a huge team effort with everyone swimming well and several new personal best times were set. Christian Bouma, Titus Parrish, Randy Johnson, Chris Benefit, Sam Mooney, Ben Gutwein, Ryan Stoner, and Greg Gillen set the tone as they took the lead right from the start outscoring the competition on the Medley Relay and never looked back. Tommy Emery, Max Claussen, and Ayden Johnson extended the lead going one, two, three on the 200 Free and Stephen Claussen taking second in the IM. Chris and Ryan both finished top five in the 50 Free and Stephen just got out touched for second in the 100 Free, and Max and Ayden took second and fourth in the 500 Free. Tommy, Stephen, Randy, and Max then won the 200 Free Relay, and Tommy won the Backstroke with Ryan finishing top 5 as well, and Titus followed with a top 5 finish in the Breaststroke. The Wheeler boys then closed out the meet finishing second and fifth in the 400 Free Relay. Besides all the impressive swims and big time drops/PR’s set, highlights of the meet were Max Claussen qualifying for Sectionals in the 500 Free and Tommy Emery breaking the 200 Free Conference record that he’s broken each of the last three seasons by a second and a quarter, and Tommy just missing pool and school records on the 50 Free and Backstroke by a tenth of a second. The boy next meet is this Tuesday at Calumet. Way to go Bearcats!
