Wheeler High School placed eighth as a team in a competitive girls cross country meet, finishing with 242 points. The Bearcats were led by a strong performance from sophomore Evelyn Kohne, who finished 30th overall in 21:34.38. Junior Rowan Kruszka followed closely behind, taking 32nd in 21:40.09. The Bearcats’ third scorer was freshman Kate Woolwine, who finished 59th in 24:10.61. Wheeler’s fourth and fifth runners were freshman Audrey Dozois and junior Brooke Lawson. Dozois placed 60th in 24:24.37, while Lawson was 61st in 24:28.07. The close finishes between Wheeler’s third, fourth and fifth runners helped the Bearcats complete their team score. Sophomore Mila Naumovic also competed for Wheeler, finishing 70th in 25:13.69. Senior Julia Pearce placed 87th in 26:26.82, followed by freshman Aubree Camp in 89th at 27:46.24 and freshman Andi Webb in 90th at 27:53.96. Kohne and Kruszka gave Wheeler a solid front end, while the team’s depth was highlighted by five runners finishing within roughly three minutes of one another. The boys team finished 11th as a team in a competitive meet, scoring 306 points. The Bearcats were led by sophomore Chase Mattull, who turned in the team’s top performance by placing 32nd overall in 17:58.41. Junior Andrew Camp was Wheeler’s second runner across the finish line, finishing 55th in 18:39.66 at a 6:00-per-mile pace. Sophomore Lincoln Stachowiak followed in 72nd place, clocking 20:04.14 and averaging 6:28 per mile. Junior Brady Anderson was the Bearcats’ fourth scorer, placing 73rd in 20:45.11, while senior Ethan Dozois rounded out Wheeler’s scoring five with a 74th-place finish in 21:39.63. Wheeler also had strong contributions from junior Ayden McClellan, who finished 75th in 22:22.61, and junior Sam Mooney, who placed 77th in 23:01.62. Junior Harrison Barrett completed Wheeler’s lineup in 25:02.85, finishing 100th overall. Junior Patrick Andreides rounded out the team in a time of 27:02.64. Mattull’s sub-18-minute performance gave Wheeler a solid lead runner, while Camp also broke the 19-minute barrier. The Bearcats will look to build on the performance as the season continues next week at the Harrison Invitational.
