The Bearcat Cross Country teams made their season debut this past weekend at Hebron High School. Wheeler High School’s boys cross-country team turned in a solid performance at the meet, placing five runners among the top 72 finishers in a competitive field that included athletes from 14 schools. Sophomore Chase Mattull led the Wheeler effort, finishing 28th overall in 18:37. He was followed closely by junior Andrew Camp, who also clocked 18:37 to place 29th. Junior Ayden McClellan finished 56th in 20:31, establishing a personal best. Junior Brady Anderson was next for Wheeler, placing 59th in 20:40, another personal best. Sophomore Lincoln Stachowiak rounded out Wheeler’s listed five scoring runners, finishing 64th in 21:06. The Wheeler High School girls cross country team turned in a solid performance at its latest meet, placing 6th out of 12 teams. Leading the way for the Lady Bearcats was sophomore Evelyn Kohne, who finished 15th overall in 21:07. Kohne was Wheeler’s first finisher and helped establish a strong foundation for the team’s scoring effort. Junior Rowan Kruszka followed closely, crossing the finish line in 21:40 to place 22nd overall. Kruszka’s performance gave Wheeler two runners inside the top 25. Freshman Roma Pagone continued Wheeler’s strong showing with a 23:30 finish, good for 42nd place. Pagone’s result was also a personal best, an encouraging sign for the young runner. Another freshman, Kate Woolwine, finished 50th in 24:27, also recording a personal-best performance. Freshman Audrey Dozois rounded out Wheeler’s top five, finishing 58th in 24:57 and setting another personal best.
