Boys' Golf Takes a Disappointing 3rd at GSSC Tourney

Sporting a 6-1 round-robin conference record going into Monday's Greater South Shore Conference Tournament at Palmira Golf Club, the team knew they were going to need some really good performances to take down defending champion Illiana Christian and take first place. Despite a 4th place overall (and First Team All-Conference) finish by senior Mark Gillen, and Second Team All-Conference efforts from fellow seniors Ryan Smith and Jake Robinson, the team score of 377 was not enough to catch Illiana's 331. Add in a surprisingly good effort top-to-bottom from Bishop Noll, whom the Bearcats beat handily in regular-season play, and Wheeler ended up coming in a very disappointing 3rd place. All five golfers lamented the shots they "left out there," especially considering that one fewer stroke per man would have bested Noll's 374. With little time to lick their wounds, the golfers get into action again on Wednesday at Wicker Park Golf Course, taking on Highland and Portage.
